Explained: Direct-to-mobile broadcast tech and how it can help users to access OTT content without internet

The government is exploring a new technology that will enable users to download multimedia content directly on their mobile phones even without an active internet connection. Direct to Mobile (D2M) technology will help the government — to convey important information directly to the citizens, issue emergency alerts, counter fake news and assist with disaster management. The Department of Technology (DoT) has conducted a study to determine a spectrum band that will help in offering broadcast services directly to users’ smartphones. In September, IIT Kanpur collaborated with public service broadcaster Prasar Bharati to test the feasibility of the D2M technology and delivered a proof of concept. Here, we will discuss the technology and will explain how it will help users to access OTT content without internet connectivity.

Direct to Mobile (D2M) technology: What is it
The D2M technology is still in the development phase and won’t be available before three to four years. This new tech works similarly to FM radios and uses a receiver (that is included in the device) to access the radio frequencies. OTT platforms can also use the D2M tech to directly push multimedia content to mobile phones. Prachar Bharati (DD) currently uses the 526-582 MHz band for terrestrial TV broadcasting and the same band is expected to work in sync for both mobile and broadcast services.

Direct to Mobile (D2M) technology: Importance for consumers
For consumers, this technology will enable smartphone users to access multimedia content on OTT platforms without exhausting their mobile data. This will help customers to reduce their mobile data bills. D2M can also help users who reside in rural areas where the availability of the internet is uncertain. Users living in places with limited or no internet access will be able to watch video content without an active internet connection.

Apart from this, the new technology can also support students to access quality educational content for schools and colleges that are situated in remote areas. Moreover, with this technology, farmers can also access weather forecasts and information on different agricultural practices without the internet.

This new technology will have multiple functions for different types of consumers starting with the government. The D2M tech will help the government to spread urgent information to the citizens of the country without having to rely on internet connectivity.

D2M will also help the cable and DTH sectors to broadcast directly to the consumers’ homes and for doing so, the operators won’t require any intermediary. This tech will also allow telecom and internet service providers to relieve the mobile spectrum by offloading video traffic from their mobile network onto the broadcast network. The decongested bandwidth will result in increased data speeds and reduced call drops.
